Palma Cathedral & Terraces + Museum of Sacred Art
Terraces of La Seu, Palma's Best Viewpoint
The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Palma, popularly known as La Seu, offers one of the best viewpoints in the capital of Mallorca from its upper levels.
With this ticket to the terraces of the Palma Cathedral, you can enjoy the beautiful scenic views of the city skyline and its bay at your own pace. Plus, from here, you can admire other architectural details of the cathedral, like its buttresses, the main rose window, and the bell tower.
Access to the terraces of Palma Cathedral is granted in 30-minute shifts. Once on these upper terraces, you can stay there for up to 1 hour.
Cathedral of Santa Maria de Palma
La Seu, the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Palma, is known as the temple of light. Among its main attractions, the following stand out:
Rose Window
Over 1000 colorful crystals form the stained-glass window of the world's largest Gothic rose window, which spans about 42 ft (13 m) in diameter and covers an area of nearly 1076 ft² (100 m²).
Thanks to this rose window, on February 2 and November 11, the known vuit de la Seu takes place, when the morning light projects a perfect "8" of light.
Gaudí Interventions
Mallorca's cathedral has the privilege of having one of the few projects that Antoni Gaudí, the great genius of Barcelona Modernism, designed outside of Catalonia: the central nave of La Seu, restored at the beginning of the 20th century.
The influence of the architect of the Sagrada Família can be seen in the baldachin and in the increased brightness of La Seu, achieved by removing the choir that blocked the central nave and widening the windows.
Capilla del Santísimo
This space in the Palma Cathedral also has a personal stamp of another genius. In 2007, Miquel Barceló incorporated a mosaic inspired by the miracle of bread and fish to this chapel.
Panteón Real
The royal mausoleum houses the tombs of great kings of the Kingdom of Mallorca, such as James II and James III.
Museo Catedralicio
Located inside La Seu, the Museo Catedralicio has a large collection of gold and silver monstrances, as well as other religious objects of great value.
This museum should not be confused with the Museu d'Arte Sacre de Mallorca, which is found outside of the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Palma.
MASM, the Museu d'Arte Sacre de Mallorca
The Museum of Sacred Art of Mallorca is inside the Palacio Episcopal de Palma, whose most notable work is the Retablo de San Jorge (Altarpiece of Saint George). A true gem of Mallorcan Gothic painting!
Among its most unique pieces, you'll find the figure of a dissected crocodile which, according to a 17th-century legend, used to terrify children living in downtown Palma at night.
The MASM is also renowned for its extensive collection of Flemish paintings and tapestries. The tapestries, crafted in the 16th century in the workshops of Brussels, depict various biblical scenes, such as the blessing of Jacob.
