History

The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela was built in the Romanesque style between 1075 and 1211. However, over the years Gothic and Baroque elements have been added to the original structure. The site is also home to the tomb of St. James the Apostle and has been an important site of Christian pilgrimage since the Middle Ages.

What to see

The outside of the cathedral is best enjoyed from the Praza do Obradoiro square. Beneath the cathedral, discover the Tomb of the Apostle St. James, where his disciples Saint Athanasius and Saint Theodore are also buried, and are the reason that this cathedral is such an important pilgrimage site.

How to visit

You can enter the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral for free. However, there is an admission fee to enter the museums, the cloister, the Portico of Glory, the library and the Treasure Room.
